Alvin Rosentreter

Alvin Louis Rosentreter, age 87, a lifelong Vergas area resident, passed away under hospice care on Friday, February 12, 2010 at Emmanuel Nursing Home in Detroit Lakes, MN.
Alvin was born June 12, 1922 to Emil and Erna (Zitzow) Rosentreter in Dora Twp., Otter Tail Co., MN. He grew up and attended school in Dora Twp. through the eighth grade. Following his schooling, Alvin remained in Dora Twp. where he worked on the family farm. On June 15, 1944, Alvin was united in marriage to Ruth Glawe at Zion Lutheran Church in Detroit Lakes. After they were married, the young couple made their home on a farm in Candor Twp. where they remained until Alvin's passing. Alvin truly enjoyed farming and earned the East Otter Tail County Farmer/Homemaker award on February 16, 1992. When Alvin was not busy on the farm, he enjoyed hunting, fishing and dancing with his wife, Ruth. During his retirement years, Alvin kept busy trapping gophers in the area. Alvin was an active member of the Candor Twp. board where he served for 21 years. He was an active member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Vergas where he served as an elder and trustee for 6 years and also enjoyed singing with the church choir for 30 years. He also served on the Vergas elevator board for 6 years.
Alvin is survived by his wife of 65 years, Ruth; 5 children: Judy (Victor) Johnson of New England, ND, Rodney (Kathie) of Vergas, Randy of Vergas, Gary (Ailene) of Lake Park, MN and Wayne of Vergas; 4 grandchildren: Bethany (Ryan) Shern of West Fargo, ND, Kyle Johnson of Jamestown, ND, Erika Johnson of West Fargo, ND and April Rosentreter of Minneapolis, MN; 2 great grandchildren; 2 brothers: Ben (Lois) of Lindstrom, MN and Melvin (Donna) of Vergas; 3 sisters: Gertrude Glawe of Detroit Lakes, Betty Glawe of Vergas and Dorothy Rehbein of Dent; and 1 sister-in-law, Jane Rosentreter of Fergas Falls, MN.
Alvin was preceded in death by his parents; and 4 siblings: Viola, in infancy, Harry, Adeline McKenzie and Violet Hoffman.
Funeral services will be held 11 A.M., Wednesday, February 17, 2010 at the St. John's Lutheran Church in Vergas with Rev. Robert Hinckley officiating. Casketbearers will be: Mark Glawe, Larry Rosentreter, Darrell McKenzie, Perry Rosentreter, Virgil Hoffman, David Glawe, Arlen Rehbein, Leon Glawe, Lonnie Rohloff, Tammy Schultz, Doug Rosentreter, Glen Rosentreter, Laurel McKenzie, Allen Rehbein and Dennis McKenzie. Mathew McKenzie and Michelle Johnson will sing "For It Is Well With My Soul." Dona Hanson will be the organist. Congregational hymns will be: "How Great Thou Art", "Beautiful Savior", and "What A Friend We Have In Jesus". Interment will be made in the St. John's Lutheran Church cemetery. Visitation will be held Tuesday, February 16, 2010 from 5-8 P.M. at the St. John's Lutheran Church with a prayer service to be held at 8 P.M. Visitation will also be held one hour prior to the service at the church on Wednesday. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Furey Funeral Home, Frazee, MN.
