Bernard Furey

Bernard J. Furey, 86, retired Frazee Funeral Director, died Thursday at the Frazee Care Center. Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 AM Monday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Fr. Xavier Ilango, Officiating. Interment will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery with Military Rites provided by Heart O'Lakes V.F.W. Post 7702.Friends may call 3:00 - 7:00 PM Sunday with a Knights of Columbus Rosary at 6:30 PM and Parish Vigil at 7:00 PM at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. The visitation will continue 1 hour prior to the mass on Monday at the church.

Bernard James Furey, known as Barney, was born November 25, 1925 in St. Paul, MN to John D. and Mary Louise (Auge) Furey. He is a 1943 graduate of Willow River (MN) High School and served with the U. S. Navy, 1943 - 1946. Following his discharge, he attended the University of Minnesota, College of Mortuary Science, graduating in 1951. Barney was united in marriage to Katherine Tuttle, June 10, 1950 in Bruno, MN. Following his graduation from the University of Minnesota, he worked as a mortician for Johnson Mortuary in Duluth 1951 - 1960 and for O'Halloran & Murphy Funeral Home in St. Paul, MN 1960 - 1963. In November, 1963, Barney and Kay purchased the Miller Funeral Home in Frazee and changed the name to Furey Funeral Home which they operated until 1994. He was also instrumental in establishing the Frazee Care Center at that time. They then spent their retirement years in Frazee where he enjoyed time with his family, traveling, fishing and gardening.
Barney was an honorary charter member of the Knights of Columbus Council in Frazee, the Vergas Lions Club and Heart O'Lakes Post #7702 V.F.W.

Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Kay of Frazee; 3 daughters: Kathy Furey of Minneapolis, Ann (Brent Gurtek) Doberstein of Duluth, Bernadette Furey of Cambridge, MN; 5 Sons: Tom (Mary Kenning) Furey of Minneapolis, Joe (Susan) Furey of Clearwater, MN, Jim (Heather) Furey of Apple Valley, MN, Patrick (Sara) Furey of Frazee, Nick Furey of Virginia, MN; 30 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren; foster daughter, Rosemary (Martin) Gordon of Bayfield, WI and foster son, Thanh Nguyen of Worcister, MA; 2 sisters: Irene Thill of White Bear Lake, MN and Angeline Spindle of Sun City, AZ. He was preceded in death by a son, Paul and brothers: Joseph, Jim, John, Raymond, Leonard and sisters: Patricia, Alice and Marie.
