Bertha K. Sonnenberg, age 93, of Vergas, MN, passed away Wednesday, December 31, 2014, at the Frazee Care Center under the Care of Red River Valley Hospice, surrounded by her family.
Funeral services for Bertha will be held 2 p.m. Friday, January 9, 2015, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church - Loon Lake, Vergas, MN. Visitation will be held from 4-6 p.m., Thursday, January 8, 2015 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church - Loon Lake with a prayer service to take place at 6 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday. Burial will take place in the St. Paul's Lutheran Church Cemetery.
Bertha was born March 9, 1921, in Gorman Township, Otter Tail County, MN, the 8th of 10 children born to Michael and Margaret (Yaeger)Schriver. Bertha grew up in the Dent area where she attended school. Following her schooling, she worked as a waitress in Dent, where she met Reinhart Sonnenberg. The couple was married July 22, 1942, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Vergas, MN. The couple made their home on Reinhart's family dairy farm in rural Vergas where they raised 5 children. Bertha helped with many of the farm chores along with caring for her family.
Bertha was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church - Loon Lake. She enjoyed cooking and baking, spending time outdoors tending to her gardens, knitting, crocheting but most of all, Bertha enjoyed family get-togethers where she could spend time with her children and grandchildren. Bertha's life was saddened by the passing of her husband in 1997. Due to health reasons, Bertha had made her home at the Frazee Care Center for the last 8 years. She will be dearly missed by her family.
Bertha is survived by 4 children: Eugene Sonnenberg of Dent, MN, Roger (Robin) of Arcadia, CA, DuWayne (Marilyn) of New York Mills, MN, and Virginia Sonnenberg of Vergas; daughter-in-law, Bonnie Sonnenberg of Vergas; 14 grandchildren; 27 great grandchildren; 1 great great grandchild; 1 sister: Erma Carlson of Fergus Falls, MN; along with numerous nieces and nephews.
Preceding Bertha in death were her parents; husband, Reinhart; son, Denis; daughter-in-law, Gayle; granddaughter, Heather and grandson-in-law, Brian Mitchel; 6 sisters and 2 brothers.
