The memorial service for Doris Berstler, 89, Frazee, MN, formerly Jamestown, N.D., will be held at Furey Funeral Home, Frazee, on Friday, March 30 at 1:30 p.m. with visitation one hour prior to the service. She died Sunday, March 25, 2018 at Frazee Care Center.
Doris Hannah Malstrom was born Oct. 21, 1928, to DeForest and Edna (Stenberg) Malstrom of Mapleton, North Dakota. She was raised on a farm near Mapleton and graduated from Fargo Central High in 1946. She attended Moorhead State University and graduated from North Dakota State University in 1951.
She married Royal R. Berstler on July 10, 1951. The couple lived in rural Mapleton until 1970 when they moved to Jamestown. Doris worked two years for the Jamestown Public Schools before accepting a position with the school as special needs coordinator in 1975. She retired in 1989.
In 1989, she was named Educator of the Year by the North Dakota Association of Retarded Citizens. She was a member of the United Presbyterian Church in Jamestown. She moved to Frazee Assisted Living in 2011.
Doris had a love for birding, crossword puzzles and card games, including bridge, pinochle, whist and Skip-Bo.
Survivors include: son, Russell (Linda) Berstler, Frazee; daughters Rebecca (Tom) Bear of Eldridge, N.D., Gale (Delair) Kaas of Frazee, and Patricia (Miles) Gehlhar of Ypsilanti, N.D.; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; sister Mary Anna (Paul) Ruliffson of Fargo; and brother DeForest Malstrom of Park Rapids.
Preceded in death by her husband (1999), three brothers, and four sisters (Vivian Nisemeier, Margie Cockerill, Charlotte Salzwadel, Donna Preston).
