Dorothy Bylander

Dorothy Bylander, age 94, of Vergas, MN, passed away Wednesday, October 23, 2013, at Thomas House One in Perham, MN.

A funeral service for Dorothy will be held 1 p.m., Saturday, October 26, 2013, at the Vergas United Methodist Church. Burial will take place at Sybil Lake Cemetery immediately following the service. Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m., Friday, October 25, 2013, at the Furey Funeral Chapel in Vergas. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday.

Dorothy was born September 15, 1919, in Roberts County, South Dakota, the eldest of 3 children born to Thomas and Cora Casey. Dorothy grew up in Sisseton, SD, moving with her family to St. Paul, MN, at the age of 13. She graduated from Central High School with the class of 1936. Following high school, Dorothy attended Minneapolis School of Business for a year.

Dorothy was united in marriage to Cevelius T. "Bye" Bylander on January 1, 1940, in Sisseton, SD. The couple lived in Columbia Heights, MN, with their 3 daughters until moving to Vergas, MN, in 1945, where they welcomed a son. The couple owned and operated a farm on Sybil Lake, which they also turned into a bed and breakfast, eventually opening up Bylander Resort right next to the family farm, which is still in operation today due to its great tenants. Dorothy was a very creative woman and was always on the go. She enjoyed cooking, spending time outdoors; bird watching, gardening and even served as 4-H leader for a number of years.

She is survived by 2 daughters: Phyllis Bylander of Maple Grove, MN and Dolores (Don) Bernauer of Perham, MN; 1 son, Mark Bylander of Vergas, MN; 12 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; 12 great great grandchildren; and a half brother, Tom A. Casey of Rapid City, SD.

Preceding Dorothy in death were her parents; husband, Cevelius "Bye"; 2 brothers; a daughter, Deanna; and 2 infant granddaughters.
