Duane "Dewey" August Zitzow, age 64, of Vergas, MN, passed away Saturday, December 14, 2013, at Essentia Health in Fargo, ND, following an accident while helping a friend.
A memorial service for Dewey will be held 11 a.m., Saturday, December 21, 2013, at the Vergas Event Center. Visitation will begin one hour prior to the service at the event center.
Dewey was born December 6, 1949, in Detroit Lakes, MN, to Donald and Inez (Lewis) Zitzow. He grew up in Vergas, attending Frazee-Vergas High School, graduating with the class of 1967. Following high school, Dewey joined the North Dakota Happy Hooligan Air National Guard. Following an honorable discharge, Dewey went to work for his Dad at Zitzow Electric. He then worked for Spalj Construction in Deer River, MN.
Dewey married Darcy Frantz on December 22, 1972. The couple had 4 sons: Jeff, Greg, Kevin and Nic.
In 1978, Dewey bought Zitzow Electric from his Dad. He sold Zitzow Electric to his son, Jeff in 2008, while continuing to work until retiring in September of 2013.
Dewey was a kind and selfless man who truly enjoyed helping others. He would gladly help his friends and his community however he could. He was the kind of man who would give you the shirt off his back. He also loved to spend time with his family and his 2 grandchildren. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, his vegetable gardens, and had a hobby farm for several years. His dog, Jake, was a great companion and went everywhere with Dewey.
Dewey was a lifetime member of the Vergas United Methodist Church, was a member of the Vergas Fire Department for 23 years, serving as the fire chief for a number of years. He was also a Frazee-Vergas School Board member for a time.
Dewey is survived by 4 sons: Jeff (Wendy), Greg (Kelsey Schmid), Kevin, and Nic (Katie Boen) all of Vergas; 2 grandchildren: Derek and Kenna; 3 siblings: Connie Mae McPherson of Detroit Lakes, Brian (Kelle) Zitzow of Cottage Grove, MN, and Byron (Connie) of Vergas; along with numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Preceding him in death were his parents, Donald and Inez Zitzow; and brother, Kenneth "Zig" Zitzow.
