Emery Gordon Stordahl, age 94, of Vergas, MN, formerly of Moorhead, MN, passed away surrounded by family on Thursday, February 1, 2018, under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley.
Emery was born January 15, 1924, in McIntosh, MN, to Henry and Clara (Shannon) Stordahl. He grew up in McIntosh, attending country school, then graduating from McIntosh High School with the class of 1942. Following his schooling, he worked on the family farm. In 1946, he served in the United States Army of Occupation in Germany. He was honorably discharged in 1947. Upon his return he purchased a gas station in McIntosh which he owned and operated for a number of years.
Emery was united in marriage to Opal Olson on June 23, 1951, at Grace Lutheran Church in Erskine. Four children were born to the marriage: Patricia, Robert, Mark & Todd. In 1957, the family made their home in Moorhead, MN, where Emery began his career in the public health department with the City of Moorhead, and served as the Director for many years. He retired in 1985.
Following Emery’s retirement, the couple moved to Spirit Lake near Vergas, MN, where they lived and enjoyed the lake for nearly 10 years. Eventually, the couple bought a home near Long Lake in Vergas where they resided for many years.
Emery was an active member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Moorhead and later, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Loon Lake.
Emery is survived by 4 children: Patricia (Duane) Strand of Vergas, MN, Robert (Jeri) Stordahl of Pelican Rapids, MN, Mark (Maurina) Stordahl of Vergas, MN, and Todd (Patricia) Stordahl of Freeport, MN; 9 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; 2 brothers: Kalmer (Marion) Stordahl of Marquette, MI, and Don (Norma) Stordahl of Little Rock, AR; along with several nieces and nephews.
Preceding Emery in death were his parents; and his wife, Opal in 2013; 3 brothers: Howard, Orville and Richard; 2 sisters: Ethel Gillenwater and Marie Narum.
In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred to Hospice of the Red River Valley and St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Loon Lake.
Funeral service will be held 2 PM, Tuesday, February 6, 2018, at St. Paul’ Lutheran Church, Loon Lake.
Visitation will be held from 5-7 PM, Monday, February 5, 2018, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Loon Lake with a prayer service to be held at 7 PM.
Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday. Burial will be made at St. Paul’s Lutheran Loon Lake Cemetery next to his wife of 61 years, Opal.
