Florence M. Dey, age 93, Vergas, MN, died Monday, April 10, 2017, at Oak Crossing in Detroit Lakes, MN.
Funeral services will be 11:00 AM, Monday, April 17, 2017, at St. John's Lutheran Church, Vergas, MN, Reverend Del Stohs, officiating. Interment will be in Free Thinkers Cemetery, rural Vergas. Friends may call 5:00 – 7:00 PM, Sunday with a prayer service at 6:30 pm at St. John's Lutheran Church and 1 hour prior to the service at the church on Monday.
Florence Mildred Dey was born April 13, 1923, in Spokane, WA, to Arley Schimelfenig. When she was four years old, they moved to Vergas where she lived with her Grandma Schimelfenig. Florence was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul's Lutheran Church at Loon Lake and attended District 98 country school and 1 year of high school. She earned her G E D in 1988. Florence was united in marriage to William Dey, November 10, 1940 (one day before the famous Armistice Day Storm) in Detroit Lakes. To this union was born 5 children. William died in 2002. Florence did house work and painting for many people in the area. She also worked for Furey Funeral Home as a receptionist for over 20 years; for the Frazee V. F. W. for over 20 years; for Perry's Place in rural Vergas for over 20 years and for Otter Tail County as a homemaker aide for over 10 years. She also helped at the area mink ranches during the pelting time which was her most favorite job.
Florence was a member of the Minnesota Steam Threshers Reunion at Rollag, MN, where she was the Honorary Queen in 1989. And enjoyed demonstrating Maytag wash machines in Flossie's Laundry. She enjoyed bowling (She is a member of the Frazee Bowling Hall of Fame), crocheting, doing puzzles and reading. She was also Grand Marshall of the Vergas Loony Days Parade in 2014.
Survivors include a daughter, Alice McKerral of Dayton, OR; 2 sons: Wayne Dey of Oxnard, CA and Darrell Dey of Vergas, MN; 8 grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill; her mother, and 2 daughters: Carol and Darla.
