Gertrude Alberta Lomsdal, age 94, of Moorhead, MN, formerly of Frazee, MN, passed away peacefully at her granddaughter’s home, surrounded by her family, on Monday, October 9, 2017.
Funeral services will be held 1 p.m., Saturday, October 14, 2017, at Grace United Methodist Church in Moorhead, MN. Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m., Friday, October 13, 2017, at Furey Funeral Home in Frazee with a prayer service to take place at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday. Burial will be made at Lakeside Cemetery in Frazee at 4 p.m. Furey Funeral Home is assisting the family with funeral arrangements.
Gertrude was born October 24, 1922, in Consort, Alberta, Canada, to Harry and Ethel (Grummett) Greenfield. She grew up on the family farm near Consort where she attended country school. Following her schooling, she enlisted in the Canadian Air Force where she served for 4 years, during WWII. She enjoyed playing 3rd base on the Air Force softball team. Following an honorable discharge, Gertrude married Orris Lomsdal on June 1, 1946. The couple ranched for a short time in Consort, then moved to Moorhead, MN, before purchasing the farm near Frazee in 1949. The couple raised 3 children: Gloria, Howard and Diane. Gertrude stayed very active working on the family farm and raising her family. Gertrude loved to visit and there was always someone at the kitchen table. She was an excellent cook and baker, and enjoyed tending large gardens.
Gertrude was a member of the United Methodist Church in Frazee and stayed very involved with church activities. For the past 9 years, Gertrude was blessed to live with her granddaughter, Mackenzie and her husband, Mike and their children, Faith, Hope, Liam, Grace and Serenity. Gertrude enjoyed getting to know their church family and friends and was “grandma” to the many kids who came to know her. Gertrude had a contagious smile and will be remembered for her wave, and her gracious, “thank you, thank you, thank you”.
Gertrude is survived by 3 children: Gloria (John) Nelson of Chattanooga, TN; Howard (Lark) Lomsdal of Frazee, and Diane (Marty) Aho of Frazee; 6 grandchildren: Patrick (Tanya) Nelson, Ben (Suzanne) Nelson, Matt (Laura) Aho. Mackenzie (Mike) Hamm, Adam (LaBreena) Aho, Lindsey (Andy) Groettum; 12 great grandchildren; along with numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Orris Lomsdal in 1993; great granddaughter, Nizhoni Hamm; 2 sisters and 1 brother.
