Jon Dale Glawe, age 66, of Vergas died unexpectedly yet peacefully at his home on Sunday, January 3, 2016.
Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, January 8 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Vergas with a prayer service at 7:00. Celebration of life will take place on Saturday, January 9 at the Vergas Event Center at 11:00 a.m., with a visitation one hour prior to the service.
Jon was born on January 9, 1949, to Dale and Vernice (Dullum) Glawe in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota. He grew up on a farm near Vergas and went to Country School District 116 through 6
th
grade. Jon graduated from Perham High School in 1967. He was on the wrestling team in the 103 lb. weight class, becoming the Heart of the Lakes champion and District 23 champion, making it to the state competition. After graduating, he moved to California and went to Ventura Community College for two years, where he earned his Associates degree and also wrestled, winning the California Western State Conference title.
Jon was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1970 and was a sergeant in the 3d Armored Division (Spearhead), stationed in Frankfurt, Germany. He was honorably discharged in March of 1972. Jon married his high school sweetheart, Darla Olson, in June 1973.
Jon began a career with the U.S. Post Office in Minneapolis. He later moved back to Vergas, where he owned and operated the family dairy farm with his brother, Glen, until the late 1990s.
After his dad’s passing, Jon took over the rural mail route delivering mail for the town of Vergas and the surrounding areas for 36 years until his retirement in 2011. He became well-known by many on his route.
Together, Jon and Darla raised three children: Nicole, Brett, and Kraig.
Jon loved hunting and took advantage of every opportunity to spend time in the outdoors. He treasured going to Montana in the fall to hunt for deer, elk, and antelope. He also never missed the opportunity to spend time in his deer woods hunting and cutting wood with his sons and brothers. Jon was always looking for the elusive trophy buck.
Jon also enjoyed playing Monday night cards and cheering on the Minnesota Gophers, Twins, and Vikings. He rarely went a day without donning Gophers gear of some sort.
He was an avid reader and a trivia buff, and he enjoyed watching movies of all kinds. He also loved the Rolling Stones, having attended several concerts with family members over the years.
Jon thrived on being with people, had a terrific sense of humor, and could strike up a conversation with anyone, whether he knew them or not. He truly remembered every detail about the people he met and loved.
Jon helped many people in the community, from mowing lawns on his John Deere rider to delivering important packages after hours, and volunteering at the church.
He was a member of the Jaycees, the Vergas Investment Club, the Lions Club, the Lake Sybil Rod & Gun Club, the Lake Sybil Cemetery Committee, the American Legion, and St. John’s Lutheran Church.
Jon would be the first person to lend a hand when needed and the last person to ever ask for any help for himself. He worked harder than almost anyone, having two full-time jobs, giving his family and all those around an example to follow of leading a good and decent life. There are no words to express the sadness we feel that our husband, dad, brother, and grandfather is gone. But we are comforted in knowing his lasting legacy remains in the difference he made in so many people’s lives. We have peace in remembering his steadfast faith in his Creator.
Jon is survived by his wife Darla of Vergas; one daughter, Nicole (Eric) Hoplin of Vienna, Virginia; two sons, Brett (Michaela) Glawe of Perham, and Kraig Glawe (and his friend Lacey Heruth and her son, Carsen) of Vergas; one brother Kevin Glawe and one sister Nancy Glawe also of Vergas; sisters-in-law Kathy Glawe of Vergas, Deana (Steve) Koehnen of Fargo, and Lynn (Terry) Lehman of Perham; brother-in-laws Dave Weisgerber of Frazee and Larry Olson of Perham; sister-in-law Joyce Stapf of Northfield; aunts Mavis Pfeiffer and Betty Dullum; uncle Tom Wollenzein; and uncle and aunt Dick & Geneva Dullum.
