The funeral services for Mary Sophia Karppinen, 90, Frazee, MN, formerly of Wolf Lake, MN, will be Friday May 1, 2009, 2:00 p.m. at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Frazee, MN, with Rev. William Aufdenkamp officiating. Visitation is scheduled from 5-8 p.m. at Furey Funeral Home on Thursday April 30, 2009 with a Prayer Service at 7:30 p.m. and also 1 hour prior to the service at church on Friday. Burial will be in the Wolf Lake Cemetery. Mary died at the Frazee Care Center on April 27, 2009.
Mary Sophia Aho was born on March 20, 1919 in Wolf Lake, MN, to Henry and Sophia (Haapaniemi) Aho. She was raised on a farm near Wolf Lake where she attended country school. She married Henry Karppinen on September 13, 1941 in Detroit Lakes, MN. They farmed in the Toad Lake area until they retired. She moved into the Frazee Care Center in the fall of 2004.
Mary is survived by her children, Milton Karppinen, Frazee, MN, Elaine (Bruce) Wothe, Atwater, MN, and Mahlon (Cathie) Karppinen, Glyndon, MN; grandchildren, Lissa (Mark) Borchert, Steven Wothe, Susan (Dominic) Popowski, Chris (Jen) Karppinen, and Bob (Meridith) Karppinen; great-grandchildren, Miranda, Erica, and Carson Borchert and Emma Karppinen; and many nieces and nephews.
Preceding Mary in death is her husband, Henry Karppinen; parents, Henry and Sophia Aho; brothers, Charles, Hans, Jack, Matt, twins Waino and Walter, and Eino; and sisters, Aune and Aili.
