Richard Barten

Richard "Ole" Barten, 54, Vergas, MN, passed away February 28 at his home, under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley.
A celebration of Ole's life will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, March 5, 2011 at the Vergas Community Center with Rev. Robert Hinckley officiating. Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m. Friday, March 4, 2011 at the Vergas Community Center and will continue one hour prior to the service at the Vergas Community Center on Saturday. Lunch will be hosted following the service for all to attend. Interment will take place at Spruce Grove Cemetery in the spring of 2011.

Ole was born February 9, 1957 in Ladysmith, WI, to Ted and Mary (View) Barten.

In 1977, he began working for the Soo Line Railroad. He traveled throughout Wisconsin, Illinois, North Dakota, and Minnesota maintaining the track and doing other work pertaining to the maintenance of way craft. Due to his health issues, he ended his career with the Canadian Pacific in September 2010, after 33 years. He was a proud member of the Brotherhood Maintenance of Way Employees Division - International Brotherhood Teamsters.

Ole was united in marriage to Kristina Wouters on April 7, 1984 in Vergas.

Ole was an avid outdoorsman and shared his knowledge of bow hunting by hosting several 3-D shoots at his home. His other passion was motorcycle riding which he enjoyed with many family and friends.

Ole was larger than life and always left a lasting impression.

He is survived by his wife, Kris, Vergas; daughter, Tawn (Dan) Lundgren, Ladysmith, WI; daughter, Jessica Barten (fiancAC., Tyson Sonnenberg), Vergas; sister, Margie (Dale) Hebard, Holcombe, WI; brother, Pete (Pat) Barten, Kalispell, MT; sister, Delores Beaudin, Hayward, WI; sister, Nita Hebard, Copperopolis, CA; brother, Ted (Donna) Barten, Sheridan, WY; sister, Char Barten, Ladysmith, WI;brother, Chuck (Mo) Barten of Tony, WI; brother, Ed (Donna) Barten, Ladysmith, WI; brother, Tom (Pat) Barten, Stevens Point, WI; sister, Kathy (Rod) Williams, Ladysmith, WI; sister-in-law, Hilde Barten, Hart, MI; mother-in-law, Kathy Wouters, Vergas; brother-in-law, Ryan (Deb Menke) Wouters, Hawley, MN; grandchildren: Maygen and Trever Lundgren, Ladysmith, WI; special girl, Hailey Sonnenberg, Vergas; many, many nieces and nephews and his beloved grand dog, Benelli.

Ole was preceded in death by his parents, Ted and Mary Barten; his father-in-law, Larry Wouters; his brother, Ray Barten and sisters, Ida Turner and Geri Barten.
