Thomas Ulschmid

March 9, 1930 — November 18, 2023

Thomas Henry “Tommy” Ulschmid, 93, Frazee, passed away peacefully in his sleep Saturday morning at the Frazee Care Center, November 18, 2023.

Thomas was born on the home farmstead in Evergreen TWP on March 9, 1930. He was second oldest of eight children, born to the late John Henry and Marie (Holzel) Ulschmid.  He attended country schools, then graduated Frazee High School in 1947. During these years he had fond memories of blueberry picking with his mother, and the hunting camp was spent in Itasca State Park. Being a progressive farmer, Thomas remembered years of thrashing grain with his father and grandfather at local farms.  Tom married Donna (Koehnen) on June 24, 1967, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church and together they raised four children.

Tommy was an avid baseball pitcher in his earlier years, and at one point a perspective draft to the minor leagues. Tom was a lifelong farmer raising cattle and sheep. He also had a successful turkey insemination business for many years. Through the Forestry and Conservation program he was able to plant over 250,000 trees between 1976 to present.  Thomas was proud to serve as Evergreen Township supervisor from 1997-2016 and a lifelong member of the Sacred Heart Knights of Columbus, Council 12581.

He enjoyed deer hunting and ice fishing. He spent many years winemaking trying to replicate his favorite chokecherry wine.  Thousands of games of pinochle were enjoyed with his kids and grandkids. German phrases from his youth often peppered these intense games.

Tom is survived by his wife of 56 years, Donna, his children: Scott (Jennie) Ulschmid of Frazee, JoLea (Michael Martin) Ulschmid of Portland, OR, LynAnn (Chris) Ulschmid Rhinehart of Deerwood, MN and SarRena Ulschmid of Ogden, UT.  He also leaves his grandchildren: Alexander, Nolan, Mathew, Ava, Magdalena, Reece, Sebastian, Ulric, Lilliana and MoKara; his siblings: Jane (the late Lou) Rice, of Lufkin TX, Margaret (Tom) Ciurlik of Cudahy WI, Mary (Dennis) Teiken, of Lawson MO, Mark (Lynda) Ulschmid of Idaho Falls ID and a sister-in-law, Jean Rytter of St Cloud MN.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his three siblings: Gerard (Kay) Ulschmid, Robert Ulschmid, and Patsy (Jack) Jicha.

The visitation for Tom will be on Sunday, November 26, 2023 from 5 to 7 PM at SACRED HEART CATHOLIC CHURCH (202 Maple Avenue, Frazee, MN 56544).  The Knights of Columbus will lead a Rosary at 6:30 PM.  A prayer service will close out the evening at 7 PM.  Visitation continues in the church on Monday, November 27, 2023 from 9AM to 9:45 AM.  A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 AM with Fr. Adam Hamness officiating.  Interment will be at Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery.

For those wishing, memorials are appreciated to the Knights Scholarship Fund, c/o K of C Council 12581.
