Velma married Elmer Robert Wirth on December 20, 1937. They farmed most of her life around the Frazee/Perham area, raising 5 children. Velma enjoyed all aspects of the farm. She and Elmer moved off the farm and into Frazee in 1975. Velma always said when she moved off the farm, she wanted to work in a nursing home, and that is exactly what she did. She worked at the Frazee Retirement Center for 23 years.
She also loved gardening and flowers, which she continued to have up until last September when she moved to the Frazee Care Center, Assisted Living. Her yard was noted "Yard of the Month" one year, which made her very proud!!! Velma was an avid quilter and looked forward to the quilting weekends in the winter, when family and friends would come and quilt and eat! She was a wonderful cook and baker. She made countless batches of homemade donuts and taught many of her grandchildren how to bake apple pies. You could always count on a fresh apple pie any time you stopped by.
Velma never turned down an offer to play cards. She loved playing Hand and Foot with her family and friends and showed no mercy to anyone; she usually won! She also enjoyed spending quality time with her recent love, a parakeet named Buddy Bird. She taught him to say his name, among other words and phrases. It was amazing how much he sounded just like her. They were great company for each other, and he soon became a hit at the Assisted Living too, as he walked around on Velma's shoulder visiting the other residents.
Velma also loved and looked forward to Turkey Days ever year! She would host 100+ family members and friends at her house on Main Street where all enjoyed great food while watching the parade.
Velma is preceded in death by her husband Elmer (June 1980) and her son Roger (November 2010).
